All the talk lately has been about popstar, Taylor Swift’s, and NFL champion tight end, Travis Kelce’s, new relationship. All of social media has been raving about the new couple and even NFL teams are creating content off of the relationship.
Last week, the Google search Travis Kelce on Taylor Swift had over 100,000 searches. On October 12th, the Chiefs had over 100,000 Google searches, which is probably thanks to Travis Kelce, and on October 11th, the search Eras Tour Movie (Taylor Swift’s new movie) had over 50,000 searches.
Despite the craze, some people are questioning the budding relationship. All the hype surrounding the relationship seems a bit questionable.
I think it’s crazy how she came to literally only one game and all of a sudden everybody was talking about it. I actually can’t even get away from them and I’m not the only one who feels like that.
“It’s wasting my brain cells having to read and hear about it” boys varsity soccer head coach and teacher, Mr. Spinelli, joked. He even went as far as saying he hates Taylor Swift (don’t go attacking him Swifties).
Personally, I don’t hate Taylor Swift. I can admit that she has done a lot in music and is one of the biggest artists of our generation, but I’m questioning how genuine this relationship is. To me, it seems a bit too much like a strategic public relations move.
Honestly, it’s super funny as well as cool seeing the two worlds of Swifties and football interacting.
“I was watching a Chiefs game and they kept mentioning Taylor Swift and called Chiefs fans Swifties. I really don’t understand that but it was funny though”, football player, Tyler Rivers (’24), said.
Swifties are tuning in for Chiefs games and learning about football. Fans are making TikToks explaining football rules and even creating merchandise based on Taylor Swift and the NFL.
As much as I am calling phony on Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s relationship, I love what it is doing to bring a female audience to the sport. Who would’ve thought that a pop star dating somebody would create a whole new fanbase for a sports league?
I mean at this point, Taylor Swift should be named head of advertising for the NFL.
“I’m all for it and It’s good for the game because it gets females involved in football”, Swiftie Coach Denno said.
With all of this, I really cannot deny that the pairing feels unnatural and forced. For all the social media posts I see, every day it is looking more and more like a PR grab.
Giving T Swift her flowers, she is a genius when it comes to marketing and hinting at her music, as she often leaves clues for her fans about new releases, so I wouldn’t put it past her team to market a new relationship for clicks and money.
Overall, I think this is all getting out of hand and weird. I hate seeing female artists being defined by only the men they date, and Taylor Swift is the worst victim of this.
Travis Kelce is literally going to be known as the “NFL guy, dating Taylor Swift”, if people don’t stop obsessing over the new couple and Taylor Swift is once again going to be known as just the “girlfriend” to another guy, which is totally unfair to both of them.
All this pressure on a relationship from fans cannot be good, at all. We have seen what excessive paparazzi and news outlets, as well as crazy, obsessive fans, have done to celebrity relationships and it usually does not end up good.
Come on, we have to stop with the para-social relationships with celebrities we have never met. To give an example, as much as I love the Kardashians, I know when there is a stopping point.
I love rooting for a happy couple in love, but sadly, I just don’t think this is one of those couples instead a quick opportunity for some good publicity.
