Thursday, March 22, the girls lacrosse team faced the Massaponax Panthers in their home opener. The team came up with the win, 13-7.
Roxi Stone (25) and Maddy Tlapa (25) were the top scorers of the night, both having four goals.
Alongside Roxi’s four goals she had a clutch interception and one of her goals was an 8-meter after a foul during play.
Maddy was a key player for the team throughout the game, scoring late in the second quarter and scoring two goals in the third quarter, just within minutes of each other.
Overall, the team has shown great improvement since the beginning of the season and worked together as a cohesive unit.
“Our team chemistry has gotten a lot stronger and we are now able to trust each other in our abilities and has helped our communication on the field,” attack player Samantha “Sam” Orr (25) said.
The team played a strong game, forcing turnovers and capitalized on the Panther’s mistakes. Additionally, defense was pivotal for the team.
“We helped each other by covering each other’s opponent and for me personally, I worked with my other captain, Maddy, to play defense on Massaponax’s two strongest scorers,” captain Virginia Johnakin (25) said.
Working as a team sealed the game for the Eagles and everyone was able to get their opportunity playing.
Other big game players for the team were team twins Addison “Addi” and Ella Bergo (26). Addi had three goals, while Ella forced turnovers and ran the ball. In addition, Rayne Williams (26) had two goals.
At the end of the game team captains, Tlapa, Johnakin, and Grace Welch decided to give the game MVP to Ella Bergo.
The Eagles will head to Stafford County rivals, Mountain View, on Monday, March 25.
