When Alyssa Aragon (‘14) was 13 she was diagnosed with a precancerous colon. Four years later Aragon had a total colectomy in order to avoid colon cancer. In June she had her colon completely removed and it was first replaced with an external ileostomy bag.
Aragon lived with the external bag for three months before it was finally removed on Tuesday, September 17. Aragon had limited access while attached to the bag including watching what she ate and what activities she could take part in.
“I couldn’t wear what I wanted. I felt really self-conscious so I wouldn’t go swimming and I couldn’t go to the amusement park,” Aragon said.
After the removal of her bag, Aragon missed four days of school, returning on Monday, September 23. The external bag was replaced with an internal J-pouch.
“It was hard to miss school because I was worried I wasn’t getting all the info I needed. Some of the assignment I needed weren’t online so I got behind,” Aragon said.
Aragon is relieved that the surgery is behind her and that she doesn’t have to miss any more school.
“It’s really good seeing everyone again and I’m happy to know that people want to know how I’m doing,” Aragon said.
