Applying Early Action and Early Decision has turned senior year into a stressful time filled with deadlines and tough decisions for many students. While some students opt for the extra time by applying later, others choose to seek their answers early.
“I picked ED to UVA because I realized that if I got into every school I applied to, I would go to UVA regardless. Also, I really like the aspect of knowing early so I have the comfort of knowing where I am going early in the year regardless of if I get in or not because I am already accepted into other schools,” Ruth Chung (25) said.
However, the advantage of finding out sooner comes with the added pressure of meeting tight deadlines.
“I definitely had to make some changes in the way I managed my time for schoolwork, because I needed to set aside time for working on my applications,” Carlos Alvarado (25) said.
With this being said, another voice highlights how crucial time management skills are during this period.
“Time management skills are really crucial during this time because you need to be conscious of how you’re balancing extracurriculars and schoolwork, along with your applications,” Khalil Hodges (25) said.
With this being said, seniors offer advice to any upcoming students who are applying Early Action/Decision next fall.
“I would say start your personal essays early and try to get them out of the way so you have more time to do revisions,” Hannah Landman (25) said.
Adding onto this, another student emphasizes the importance of starting to study for the SAT early as well.
“My biggest tip would be to start studying for your SAT your sophomore year summer. That way, you can get a good score by the time you’re a junior and you don’t have to worry about it your senior year,” Rebecca Mesfin (25) said.
Starting early is important, but having a strong support system can make an even bigger impact.
“My family has always pushed me to get good grades and do my best in school, which has really paid off with scholarships and more,” Khalil explained.
Similar to Khalil, Ruth explains how her sister supported her.
“My sister applied ED to UVA two years ago and got in, so I had her to use as a guide. She reviewed my application and helped me submit my best work,” Ruth said.
Not only is family a huge part of this, but also the support system that the school offers.
“My counselors offered a lot of support with writing my recommendations and guiding me through the application process,” Carlos said.
While all of these factors are important, it ultimately comes down to self perseverance.
“I think the most important thing is setting goals for yourself and making sure you follow through with them, because at the end of the day this is where you’re going to spend the next four years,” Rebecca concluded.
Applying Early Action or Early Decision can be tough, but with good planning, time management, and support, students can get through it and achieve their goals.
